Founded by Laurie D. Goldstein, C.F.A. and Gary M. Goldstein in 2007, Unique Research builds upon the Goldsteins’ 17 years as publishing analysts on Wall Street. Laurie and Gary began as a generalist/special situations analyst team marketing to an Institutional client base; research was focused on locating unknown, underfollowed, turnaround or mis-priced opportunities in the small- and mid-cap arena.
With Gary’s background in operations (Midwest Regional Manager for a Fortune 50 company) and Laurie’s prior eight-year background on the buy-side (having worked with Lee Cooperman, co-founder of Goldman Sachs Asset Management, Ron Baron and the Belzbergs), the Goldsteins made a very effective sell-side team with a strong stock-picking record.
In 1994, they hit the road, literally, as Road Research, traveling the country to visit companies in a state-of-the-art, technology-laden, 38-foot Holiday Rambler Bus. They performed research on a soft-dollar basis visiting over 200 companies in 1½ years. Their unique style of conducting business has been written up by The CFA Institute and featured in The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, as well as on CNN and CNN/fn. Gary has been widely quoted in traditional media; The Wall Street Transcript featured a 15-page interview with Gary, “Outlook for Marine Transport,” March 29, 2004.
Their work received widespread Institutional exposure in 1995/1996 when they began working with Capital Investments International (CII), a boutique research shop founded by Michael Sherman and Bob Barbera, the former Chief Strategist and Chief Economist (respectively) of Lehman Brothers, and Michael Maher, former head of Institutional Sales for C.J. Lawrence. In 1997, when CII changed its mission and focus, the Goldsteins joined The Seidler Companies, where they continued to produce and market quality fundamental research. In 2000, they relocated to Gilford Securities in New York. After Gary began experiencing serious health problems in 2006, the Goldsteins took a sabbatical from conducting and publishing research, and re-entered the market in 2007 after founding the Research Boutique.
